Today in Japan, HTC unveiled the "J Butterfly" - the phone that had long been rumored as the HTC "dlx", a device sporting a 5 inch 1080p resolution display (among other cutting edge specs) - in 3 distinct colors. For now, this is an international only device, but additional carriers (hopefully including the USA) could be in line to receive this device as well.
The good folks over at Droid-Life had coverage of this event, and are reporting the specs as follows:
"The device does indeed sport a 5″ Super LCD 3 1080p display (440ppi), Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, LTE, Jelly Bean (Android 4.1), 16GB internal storage, 2GB RAM, 8MP rear camera, 2.1MP front camera, 2020mAh battery, and a microSD card slot. The J Butterfly weighs 140g and is 9.1mm thick. For Japan, it will come in 3 colors: red, white and black. HTC is expecting to launch it in December."
First, and most obvious, this screen should be gorgeous. The 1080p resolution, with a 440ppi is insane in any phone, much less one with a 5 inch screen. Paired with that screen is the Snapdragon S4, which will make it one of a very few phones (if/when its released in the U.S.) with a quad-core processor, which should make for a very smooth end user experience. The only real niggles are 1) the fact is comes with only 16GB of internal storage, but with a microSD slot on board, your storage issues should be non-existent, and 2) the somewhat pitiful 2020mah battery. With as much real estate as this screen is packing, I'd be very interested to see the real world battery life specs while its on LTE.
If the build quality of these new devices is anywhere close to the HTC One series, these things are going to be VERY nice in the hand and to use. The 5 inch form factor isn't real common right now, but isn't too much larger than a Galaxy S3. Only time will tell if this phone will come to a U.S. carrier, but my guess is we won't have to wait very long for another such announcement.
